One of the big flaws with mainstream health advice is that it assumes things will continue as they are.
But if history is any guide, we can’t be sure things will stay the same. At any time, a disaster could change your way of life.
What will you do if you can’t go to the grocery store? How about if you don’t have access to prescribed medications?
It’s not fun to think about. But it’s important to consider these things. Because now is the time to prepare you and your family as best you can.
Is Survival Preparedness Worth Your Time?
Most of us are fortunate enough to live in relative peace and abundance. And when things are going well it can be hard to imagine things changing.
It’s easy to dismiss survival “preppers” as crazy conspiracy theorists. But what if s*** really does hit the fan? They won’t appear so crazy after all.
Like it or not, our way of life is quite vulnerable. Just consider some of the ways things could go wrong:
- Failing power grid
- Armed conflict
- Nuclear strike
- Economic collapse
- Natural disaster
Perhaps the odds of any one of these things happening soon are low. But taken altogether (plus the many other possibilities not listed here), disaster doesn’t seem so improbable.
And most of us are woefully unprepared for such disasters. The vast majority of people would have an extremely difficult time providing for our families if we no longer had modern conveniences. It would be like letting a domestic animal loose in the wild – it wouldn’t end well.
Fortunately, preparing for emergencies doesn’t require a huge amount of time. You can start with baby steps.
Staying Healthy During A Disaster: Your First Steps
If you’re like most people, you are busy enough with everyday concerns. You probably don’t have time to do intensive research about survival tactics. But intensive research is not necessary.
The first step is figuring out who you should listen to about survival.
We are not a “survival” website and we aren’t experts on this topic. But we have spent a lot of time researching the best resources, blogs and experts.
Survival Blogs That Are Worth Your Time
There are a lot of options here. Some survival blogs focus on a specific sub-topic, while others are more general in scope.
Here are a few you should check out to start with:
Survival Blog is a popular website that covers a wide range of topics. It was founded by a man named James Wesley Rawles, a U.S. Army veteran, and also features other expert contributors. They cover the whole gamut of survival topics – self sufficiency, food preservation, power & alternative fuel, and much more. The sheer amount of information may be overwhelming at first, but if you spend some time browsing Survival Blog you are sure to learn some useful things.
This is another wide-ranging survival blog. It’s simple to navigate and the articles are easy to read, making it a great place for beginners who are curious about survival issues. And it’s not just about disaster preparedness – many of the articles have practical tips for our day-to-day lives.
Another great choice if you want to learn about survival preparedness. Lisa Bedford is the creator of The Survival Mom blog, which she started almost 10 years ago back when she was new to the whole “survival” thing herself. Now she has published several books on Amazon, and her blog is a wealth of good information about preparing your family for emergency situations.
Yet another solid resource for survival information. Ask A Prepper is run by the creators of The Lost Ways, which is a popular guide to the survival skills that were second nature for people living two hundred years ago (our review can be found here). Be sure to check out their free Medicinal Plant Guide, which is one-of-a-kind.
