Best Supplements To Help You Sleep Through The Night: A Guide

Best Supplements To Help You Sleep Through The Night: A Guide

You lay in bed and within minutes you realize: I’m not sleeping again tonight. Just like last night. And the night before. Getting through the day is feeling more and more like torture with each sleepless night.

If you’re dealing with insomnia, there is really only one question that matters:

“How Can I Fall Asleep Fast?”

You’ve probably already read about natural remedies for sleeplessness. But you wouldn’t be reading this if those worked for you, right?

I always advise you to try simple tricks for falling asleep first. Still, sometimes that’s not enough. Luckily there are supplements that can help you get your sleep back on track.

When Should You Use Supplements For Better Sleep?

There is no right or wrong answer here. If you have the patience to try fixing your insomnia without supplements then more power to you. You’ll save a little money that way, too.

But don’t be scared to try supplements if you’re still not sleeping. Some of the best non habit forming sleep aids are available over-the-counter and online, usually at a reasonable price. They aren’t a long-term solution, but they are great in a pinch when you have a stubborn case of insomnia.

The Best Supplements For Better Sleep

Now let’s take a look at the supplements that can help you stop the vicious cycle of insomnia and get to sleep safely and naturally.

My Criteria

For this analysis I looked for supplements that met several criteria:

  • Safe (minimal side effects)
  • Natural ingredients
  • Affordable
  • Evidence-based
  • Quick absorption (what good is a supplement that your body doesn’t absorb well?)
  • Non-habit forming
  • Good manufacturer reputation

During my research I found a few supplements that met these criteria. Because you might have different sleep needs and/or a different budget than others, I’ve listed my top sleep supplements by category.

Best Supplement If You’re On A Budget

Most of the cheaper supplements aren’t even worth your money. They often use low-quality ingredients and don’t get absorbed very well.

But they’re not all bad. Driftoff Natural Sleep Aid is relatively inexpensive, but has over a thousand positive customer reviews on Amazon.

best budget sleep aid

What I Like About It:

  • Affordable
  • Contains 2 mg melatonin (which is within the recommended range)
  • Vegetarian, non-GMO capsules and ingredients
  • Contains hops extract, which has been shown to have a sedative effect
  • Herbal blend of chamomile, passion flower, and lemon balm

What I Don’t Like About It:

  • Does not appear to ship outside United States
  • Recently updated formula no longer contains 5-HTP or tryptophan, which are both potent sleep-inducers
  • Some users report the pills have a bad smell

Best 100% Herbal Supplement

Not everybody wants ingredients like melatonin, 5-HTP, or GABA in their sleep aid. For a supplement that’s completely herbal I recommend Sleep Relax by HerbalFactors.

sleep aid 2

What I Like About It

  • 100% herbal blend which includes:
    • Valerian root
    • Hops
    • Passion flower
    • Scullcap
  • Very affordable price
  • Minimal grogginess the next day
  • Great gentle sleep aid

What I Don’t Like About It

  • Gelatin capsule (not vegan/vegetarian)
  • Small number of users report an odor

Best Supplement That Contains Magnesium

Magnesium deficiency is a real issue for a huge number of people. Low magnesium is tied to a number of health problems including poor sleeping. Although capsule form isn’t the best way to take magnesium, it can still be an effective ingredient.

Luna Natural Sleep Aid contains magnesium along with melatonin, GABA, and other herbal ingredients. It has thousands of positive reviews on Amazon, so clearly it works for some people.

What I Like About It

What I Don’t Like About It

  • The 2-capsule dose has 6 milligrams of melatonin, which is a bit more than what’s recommended for most adults
  • Some people report it didn’t work for their insomnia (despite the many positive reviews)

Best Supplement For Snoring

Too much snoring can lead to sleep disturbance for you and anyone who can hear you. Heavy snorers have diminished sleep quality and tend to report feeling sluggish during the day time.

There are a number of ways to address snoring, but the best over-the-counter supplement I found is a spray called Zz Snore made by a company named Asonor.

snoring solution

What I Like About It:

  • Reported to relieve snoring in 3 out of 4 people
  • Easier than using devices or headwear
  • Not believed to have side effects
  • Manufacturer is FDA registered
  • Formula is designed to lubricate mucous membranes (a source of snoring issues for many people)

What I Don’t Like About It:

  • Good for short-term use, but long term you’ll still need to address underlying causes of snoring (e.g. obesity, sleeping posture)

Best Melatonin-Based Sleep Supplement

Melatonin is now found in the majority of sleeping aids, but they’re not all the same. Some of them have either too much or too little melatonin. Others don’t have other active ingredients to make it more effective against insomnia.

Melatrol has the correct recommended amount of melatonin, as well as other sleep-inducing ingredients: valerian, GABA, L-5-hydroxytryptophan, and a propietary herbal blend called Relora™.

natural sleep aid

What I Like About It:

  • Contains multiple ingredients that are proven to fight insomnia and promote sleep
  • Not habit-forming
  • Combination of melatonin and GABA helps reinforce a healthy sleep schedule
  • Great for breaking the insomnia “downward spiral”

What I Don’t Like About It:

  • Not recommended for pregnant women
  • Potential for side effects if you are taking certain blood pressure medications

I recommend Melatrol as a top-notch sleep supplement for adults. Read my full review here to learn more about it.
